The smell was horrid and there was no doubt in her mind it could be detected well down the hall. A pitiful whimper escaped her lips as she yanked the door to the oven. She had to step away from the assault of the billowing smoke that attacked her fiercely. This was such a horrible idea and she didn’t know why she had asked permission to do such a thing. Ugh, the ignorant teacher had no idea what Blossom was getting herself into. All she wanted to do was cook and he wanted to be good. She wanted to make her brother and her friend Graham something delicious. She wanted to bake them cookies. However, her mother would never let her in the kitchen after last cooking incident and there was no cooking club meeting. So kindly she had asked to family living teacher permission to use the kitchen. So kindly they had allowed it.
Now the poor freshman was coughing against the smoke and stumbling back away from the blazing heat. Frantically, she waved an oven-mitt to clear the smoke so she could at least get near enough to turn the oven off. After managing that, she felt a little better – like she had the situation under control even though a nagging feeling in the back of her mind told her otherwise.
… Why was the smoke not clearing? Her white teeth bit down on her plump, bottom lip. Why was the smoke not clearing?! Oh dear god, there was a fire!! The cookies were on fire!! How did that even happen?! How did this happen?! She never heard the timer go off, not once! Had she missed it? Had she become so absorbed in her thoughts that she was distracted from her cookies until the smell of burnt chocolate and rancid smoke filled the air?
She wailed in fright at the sight of the flickering flames and hurried to the extinguisher clear across the room. Why had she used the unit farthest from the extinguisher? She’s never started a fire before! Quickly, she reached up to pry it off the wall. Just as she was turning to hurry back to her little corner kitchen, the full weight of the thing hit her and it sunk like a rock to the ground. A surprised little yelp sounded from her and her wide eyes stared down at the red boulder. It was heavier than it looked!
Her bottom lip started to tremble as she did her best to drag it back to the oven and tears were glittering and brimming in her eyes. She needed help but she’d die of embarrassment if someone saw her. But she couldn’t handle this on her own. “Help, she whined before she forced a cry, “Help!! Please!”

Charlotte was ready to go home. Even though she hadn't wanted to do it she had stayed after class to speak to her science teacher about making up the test that she had missed. Every minute that she spent extra in that teacher's classroom was like pure agony to her. Most of what was coming out of the teachers mouth went in one of Charlotte's ears and right out of the other. Truth be told she didn't even care about math or making up her tests. It was her parents that cared.
The cheerleader clutched onto her school books and headed towards her locker so that she could drop them off before she went home. They were way too heavy and there was no way she was going to carry them the entire walk. Yes, walk. She wasn't old enough to have her license after all and staying late to talk to the chatty teacher meant that she missed the big yellow bus.
She turned down the hall way that her locker was in and instantly a disgusting scent wafted to her nose. Charlotte scrunched her nose up and scoffed a little. "Oh, ew." She lifted her free hand hastily up to her nose in an attempt to block out the offending smell but it was no use. She could still smell it. It smelled like something was burning.
Then Charlotte heard the scream for help. She raised an eyebrow and picked up her pace as she followed the call and the acrid scent to the home economics classroom. No sooner than she had gotten there had Charlotte noticed the thick black smoke billowing inside of the room. "Oh my God!" The freshman dropped her books on instinct. She stood there for a moment and the next thing her instinct wanted her to do was run in the other direction but then she remembered someone had called for help.
Charlotte braved the smoke and rushed in the room to see an Asian girl she wasn't familiar with struggling with a fire extinguisher. Quickly she rushed forward and grabbed one end of the extinguisher and attempted to help her lift. "Come on! Before it gets bigger!"

Oh, thank god. Blossom was relieved to see someone coming to help her after she had been struggling with the fire extinguisher by herself. She had managed to drag it halfway to her kitchen station alone but she wasn’t going to get it there unless she somehow turned into superman. “Oh, thank you! Thank you!” she gasped with the assistance. Together, they were able to lift it at least a little off the ground and the dark-haired shifter hurried over to the oven. “How do you work it?!” She didn’t know a thing about how to work the thing. Inwardly, she started to fall to pieces and she just had to put the extinguisher down. At least it was tall enough to reach the inside of the oven. With some quick fiddling, she finally managed to get the thing working. The first spray scared her and she yelped in surprise, but she picked the hose back up and doused the fire with the white, freezing contents in the heavy red barrel.
Within seconds, the fire was out and Blossom just stared at the tray of charred cookies in the oven. Her pink, bottom lip started to tremble and those dark, almond-shaped eyes started to glisten with fresh tears. Her shy gaze glanced up at the other girl before falling to her cookies again. “Thank you for helping me,” she did her best to keep her voice from wavering with a whine, “I’m glad it was you and not a teacher. I don’t feel like getting in trouble after ruining the cookies…” Blossom’s voice drifted and she heaved a sigh. Her dainty hand reached forward and grabbed the oven-mitt so she could shove it on and take the tray of cookies out of the oven. She set the black mess on the stove.
“Do they still look… okay?” Who was she kidding? Those things looked like the pyromaniac headmaster got a hold of them. They were probably hard as a rock. “I’ve never started a fire before while baking,” and it was true. Instead of getting better, she just seemed to get worse and worse with each cooking experience. “Looks like I’ll have to get Kai something else.” Her shoulders slumped in defeat and a pout brushed over her lips. She just wanted to cuddle the Blossom plush in her back pack now.

This was a disaster and Charlotte was beginning to wonder why she didn't just go pull the fire alarm in the first place instead of trying to help this girl haul a heavy extinguisher across the room. She really didn't care if the school went up in flames. If it did that meant that she didn't have to be here and her parents would have no reason to force her. But if the school did burn down then that also meant that Charlotte would have to face the horrors of regular public school. She most definitely did not want that.
Even though the fire seemed to be out the smoke was still thick and disgusting. Charlotte scrunched up her nose one more time and began to wave her hand in front of her face as if that would clear the smoke away. "It smells horrible." She glanced at the asian girl and noticed how nervous she looked. Charlotte had never seen her around before. Was she a freshman? If she was, Charlotte wouldn't be surprised. The girl hardly looked like the sort that she would hang around with.
"You're welcome. What in the blazes were you doing? Trying to burn the school down?" Charlotte knew that it wasn't the most helpful or comforting thing to say but she couldn't help it. She was also a little shocked that even after the chaos of a fire the girl was still concerned about those charred and disgusting cookies. "No, they don't look alright. I wouldn't touch them. Just throw them in the garbage."
Charlotte really wanted to get out of his room now. The smell was getting worse and worse and worse. "Maybe we--you should tell someone." She had to correct herself. It wasn't Charlotte's fault the home economics room lit on fire so why should she have to be the one to tell someone what happened?
She stared at the helpless things that looked like they might have been cookies in a past life and raised her eyebrow at the mention of someone named Kai. It was a funny name that she'd never heard of before but she figured that it was probably someone asian just like this girl. "Who's Kai?" Not that she really cared, but maybe it was a hot guy.

It did smell horrible. It smelled rancid, and honestly, Blossom just wanted to get out of there with her pathetic cookies and go home to her brother to cry. But she had to clean this mess up because she promised. She just couldn’t figure out why she didn’t hear the timer go off. It wasn’t like she stepped even an inch out of the room. She should have heard it. Her dark eyes swept over the kitchen counter in search for the little thing but… she couldn’t… find it. Her brows furrowed in confusion before she realized that she didn’t even take the stupid thing out of her bag! Oh my god… How could she be so… so…. forgetful? It looked like whatever could go wrong, did go wrong that day…
And she just felt worse with the girl’s accusation. “I was making Kai cookies because he works so hard in school,” she mumbled, sheepishly glancing up at the girl, “I wanted to make him a treat.” For a moment, she let her gaze linger on the blonde. She’s seen the girl around school and knew the girl was a freshman. But she also knew the girl was higher on the “social status” than she was so she doubted the other knew her. “I can’t throw them away,” she sighed, “That’s a waste and I’ll feel bad.” She didn’t know what she was going to do with them, though. No one would eat them.
Blossom reached out and picked up the spatula she had set out and, with her mitted hand, she held the tray still so she could pry the mutated cookies from the surface. “I’ll tell the home economics teacher next time I see them,” her voice was quiet, timid the entire time but she wasn’t afraid of accepting full responsibility. The other wasn’t the one who nearly burned down the school with a pitiful attempt at baking.
After she managed to pry one stubborn cookie from the sheet, she grabbed her zip-lock bag and stuffed it in there. “Kai is my brother. Kai Durant.” She glanced at the girl again before continuing her vain attempt at rescuing the cookies. “I… I’m B-Blossom, by the way.” Here came her stutter…

Did this girl seriously want to save the cookies? What was wrong with her! They were probably poison thanks to the extinguisher that had just been sprayed all over them. "Uhh.. what are you doing?" There was a little bit of attitude with Charlotte's voice and she cocked her right hip to the side. Her hands rested on both of her hips before one of them carelessly waved in the direction of the cookies. "Beside the fact that they're freakishly burned you just sprayed whatever is inside this fire extinguisher can all over them! Are you trying to make someone ill?" Charlotte placed her hand back on her hip quickly once she was finished.
She was not surprised to hear that Kai was the girls brother. Someone who was a nobody (a nobody in Charlotte's eyes) couldn't possibly have a boyfriend, could they? And if it was her brother that also meant he was Asian. Charlotte wasn't really into Asian guys. Most of them seemed way too short for her. Charlotte wanted a guy that was much taller than her and very athletic and muscular. She couldn't remember the last time she saw a muscular Asian dude.
Charlotte had barely even heard when the girl introduced herself as Blossom. She was a little surprised. Blossom wasn't an Asian name. Her surprise just went to show how judgmental and narrow minded she could be. It was a good thing that these thoughts didn't actually come out of her mouth or else it wouldn't be pleasant at all. "Blossom? Is that what you said?" Charlotte nodded and waved a bit of smoke from her face. "Charlotte Kraszewski.." Though the girl probably knew that already, right? How could she not know all of the cheerleaders? They were the popular ones after all.

No, she wasn’t trying to make anyone ill but the accusation made a faint, embarrassed blush claim her cheeks. Blossom knew it was silly to still bring the cookies home with her even if they were inedible. She just had to. It was as if she was afraid no one would believe her if she didn’t bring some shred of proof. “N-No one is going to eat them,” she mumbled and continued to pry the twelve cookies off the sheet, “I… I j-just want to show Kai… To show him I tried.” It seemed like a reasonable thing in her mind. She didn’t want to make him ill, just make him feel happy that she had intended to bake him delicious cookies. Even if they turned out to be… toxic.
Blossom didn’t want to be judgmental, but the longer she spent with Charlotte, the more she couldn’t help but to think she was… She was… Kind of mean… But Blossom couldn’t judge that from just her attitude, could she? She didn’t know what the girl was thinking and assuming the girl to be mean made Blossom feel bad. She shouldn’t think such a thing about someone she hardly knew.
Blossom looked back at the girl after she sounded surprised about her name. Suddenly, she realized what she must have been thinking. Blossom certainly looked Asian but Blossom wasn’t an Asian name. For some reason, she felt she had to explain herself, as if the fact her name was what Charlotte might consider ‘normal’ could get her sent to prison just because she looked foreign. “Blossom, yes,” she quietly confirmed but couldn’t bring herself to explain she was only half Asian. She shouldn’t have to explain herself.
“It’s nice to meet you, Charlotte,” she offered her a shy, little smile before stuffing the last cookie into her zip-lock bag. After sliding the mitt off of her had, she set it on the counter and locked the baggy. “You’re one of the cheerleaders, right?” Blossom wasn’t exactly good when it came to carrying a conversation but something told her the other would want to talk about herself rather than Blossom. The half-Asian girl really didn’t want to talk about herself anyway. She just quietly walked over to her bag and unzipped the middle pouch. Her smile widened a little as her plush PowerPuff Girl peeked out at her and she quickly stuffed the cookies in her bag and zipped it closed again.
Now, all she had to do was clean.
