(Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?) Graham still felt out of his element, sometimes. Having moved here when he was fifteen, without his mum or his older brother around, it had been a big thing. It had turned out to be the right thing, since he was more at home here than he had been back in London - and since he wasn't in a gang here as opposed to in England - but from time to time he still missed them terribly. Especially when his mum was threatening to fall ill again, thankfully it still hadn't been as bad as it had been in his Sophomore year. His brother had texted him that his mum was back in the hospital again though, so he hadn't really been able to focus on class this morning, something that wasn't that unusual but at least had a reason this time.
Lunch couldn't have come at a better moment, and Gray happily piled a bit of almost everything onto his plate, his stomach pleased with the prospect of food even if it wasn't the greatest. But hey, he didn't have money and this place was his home, so any food would do. Blue eyes skimmed over the crowd to see if there was anyone around he knew, and he felt his heart skip a dizzy beat when they rested on that familiar face. He knew him so well, even if he just saw the back of his head, Gray would always know Kai Durant. It might just have a little something to do with the crush he had on him.
Making his way through the crowds, he finally approached the boy, a smile on his face. He was happy to be his friend, even if that was all they would ever be. Kai was kind and patient and sort of reminded Graham of his mother - which was probably a terrible thing to say about your crush. "Hey" He greeted him, plopping into a chair opposite from him, not bothering to ask if he was allowed. Kai liked having lunch with someone, and from the looks of him he hadn't been waiting for someone in particular, so he'd have to make do with him. "You look like you're brooding. What's up?"

Well, this was awkward. Canyon still hasn’t exactly gotten back in the flow of things since his sudden disappearance after the first semester of last year. It had been awhile since he was allowed to interact with people. He was so sick in the hospital, he couldn’t leave his room. He missed the company. But now, suddenly rushing back into the raging rivers known as the school cafeteria, he seemed like he was a little over his head. Chewing on the inside of his lip, he hovered on the fringes of the crowds, gazing into it with uncertainty. He looked like a new student shunned from the social hierarchy of teenager society, lunch bag gripped in both his hands. It was pathetic. Canyon wasn’t shy in the least but still. Teenagers didn’t exactly like it when a stranger decided to make themselves comfortable at their table without permission. He wasn’t really in the mood dealing with unneeded drama like that.
This was why a happy smile broke out on his mouth when he saw a familiar face. Graham Kerr. Man, it had been a while since he’s seen that boy! Canyon carefully weaved his way through the tables and to the one Gray had sat at. Unceremoniously, he fell into the seat at the wolf’s side: “Hey, man! Look who’s back!” Canyon chuckled, setting his lunch bag on the table and starting to open it, “What have you been up to?” He had failed to notice the other man sitting across the table from his friend. At least not until he had turned his gaze to his lunch. He just caught a glimpse at first but it was enough to make him do a double take.
… Oops. It looked like Gray already had a buddy he was sitting with. Crap, he didn’t want to have to leave but he didn’t want to be a bother, either. “Uhh…” he blurted before offering a wide smile, “I hope you don’t mind if I join you guys.” Wasn’t he in his psychology class?

( hello, i've waited here for you ever long ) Kai eagerly looked up from his apple as he heard a familiar voice, a small smile instantly tugging at the corners of his lips as his gaze fell upon one of his close friends, Graham Kerr. The senior swallowed the apple in his mouth before tilting his head a little bit, ebony hair falling over his line of vision though he neglected to push them away. However, despite the smile, Kai still seemed a little tired. "Hey, Gray.. I'm not really brooding, I'm just kind of exhausted. As usual, I am putting too much effort into school." He sighed softly, setting the apple down on the tray.
The boy shifted in his seat a bit, opening his mouth to say something more to Gray when someone else just sat down next to them and started speaking to Gray as if Kai weren't even there. Kai blinked, clearing his throat softly as he watched the guy with the brown hair. He seemed familiar, and Kai tried to figure it out for a moment but then it hit him quickly. This was Canyon Pierce and he was in Kai's psychology class. They'd spoken a few times but hadn't really had too much interaction besides that.
Finally, when Canyon acknowledged Kai's presence, Kai shook his head lightly. "You're not bothering anything. The more, the merrier." Kai thought about Canyon and how hard of a time he must have it since his best friend December had killed herself. It was a pretty big thing about the school right after it happened. "Aren't you in my psychology class?"
Kai glanced briefly over at Gray once more, smiling once again in his direction. It was nice to see Gray after the holidays. He knew that Gray had it rough too, and Kai wanted to make sure that he was okay.

(Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?) He did look tired, too, and Gray wrecked his brain trying to come up with something to do for them tonight, something that would take Kais mind off of school and studying for awhile. Maybe they could go out for a bit, take a walk or see a movie, maybe just go for a drink somewhere - not that he'd get any alcohol being underage, but a coke was fine too. Before he could reply, however, a whirlwind sat next to them and he looked up in surprise, his face shifting into a happy grin. "Can-Can!" He moved to hug him, whilst sitting down, glad that his friend was finally back in school. He'd missed that boy, other than Kai he was one of the few close friends Graham had in this place, and whereas he adored Kai, sometimes he needed someone else to talk to. "I have missed you" He smiled at him, then at Kai when his friend said he wasn't bothering anyone.
Ugh, he was so sweet. Graham looked down at his fries for a moment, dipping one in ketchup and shoving it into his mouth while his friend talked, a faint smile on his face for the both of them. "I've been alright. Spent the summer in England, as usual" He had noticed his mum feeling worse again, but he'd had to leave before the scans and tests were done, so he hadn't been able to hold her hand at the result. The fact that she was back in the hospital worried him, but he'd call Arthur the moment his classes were finished to see what was going on. "How've you been?" Gray directed the question at the both of them, smiling as he dipped another fry into the ketchup on his plate.

He was certainly pleased with Gray’s warm welcome. Enthusiastically, he wrapped an arm around his friend in a return hug. Man, he really needed one of those. Especially with all the crap that has been going on lately. “I missed you, too!” He couldn’t help the wide smile that continued to cling to his face even after he pulled away from the hug. Bright eyes darted to the one before him and a spark of remembrance flashed within them. Ah! That was right. He was in his psychology class. Kai Durant. Canyon had been right. “Oh, dude, yeah!” his brown curls gently bounced with the nodding of his head, gaze falling to his lunch as he slowly dragged it out of the bag, “Kai, right? I’m Canyon,” he really didn’t know if the other remembered his name or not. It wasn’t exactly an easy one to forget.
Though, suddenly, it seemed he was more interested in his food than his company. His dark brows furrowed in curiosity as he peeked into the thermos he had brought. Was that… Was that tea? He sniffed it. It… It didn’t smell like tea. Or soup… It didn’t smell... edible… He couldn’t remember what it was, truth be told. It was probably his roommates, too… Canyon usually ate while he was at work and then had left overs for lunch. It… wasn’t exactly the best life to live but he managed. Beggers can’t be choosers.
Really, he couldn’t remember why he brought his lunch in the first place. At least not today. He capped his thermos and stuffed it back into his bag, choosing to travel the safer route with a container of strawberries. A wave of sudden curiosity spiked his interest. Kai was eating an apple… What was Gray munching on. Nibbling on a strawberry, his gaze swooped over to his friend’s tray. The only thing he could really recognize on there were the fries and maybe a fruit or two. “… What is that?” Quickly, his gaze jumped to Kai’s tray. Looks like the lunch for today was a mystery. Even for those that brought their own food.
Canyon’s light gaze returned to Gray as he heard the other speak up again. “England? That’s great!” Even though overseas meant home to Graham, Canyon still found it fascinating, “How was it?” Though, as Gray continued, asking them about their vacation, Canyon’s demeanor changed. He didn’t plan on it nor did he really notice it. But his normally broad shoulders slumped a little and his gaze dropped to the small container of strawberries in front of him. The normally chatty boy remained quiet and peeked up at Kai hoping he’d answer first. He honestly didn’t want to think about his involuntarily long vacation… Not yet.
There was a silent and hidden plea in his expression, willing Kai to speak instead of him.

( hello, i've waited here for you ever long ) Gray's french fries looked so much better than the slop that was on his plate. Kai's blue eyes looked them over for a moment before he boldly decided to go in for the kill. Quickly, Kai snagged a french fry and doused it in ketchup, then popped it into his mouth with a rather challenging smile that almost said "what are you gonna do about it?". It was a playful smile, something that almost always accompanied Kai's happy little face at least once every hour or two. After he chewed and swallowed, Kai directed his attention back towards Canyon. "Yeah, it's Kai. I know who you are." That smile remained on his lips.
Once Canyon commented on whatever it was that was on his tray, Kai scrunched up his nose and reluctantly glanced down at it. "I.. I have no idea. It looks like mystery meat with a side of gray goop." He paused, adding as an afterthought in an attempt to both keep his mind off of how tired he was and to let Gray know that he hadn't changed. He still liked to joke around. "Looks like something Gray tried to cook me last year.."
Now he just wanted another french fry, and he took to eyeing that plate briefly before he picked his apple back up and took a bite. It just didn't taste the same. It wasn't greasy and salty and delicious. The boy frowned for a moment at this revelation, his eyes sweeping up to look at Canyon has Gray asked how things were. Kai was observant, he was smart. He could tell instantly by the boy's sudden change in demeanor that he didn't really want to talk about whatever it was that had happened to him over the summer.
And because Kai was a good friend even to those he wasn't really friends with, he simply smiled and answered Gray instead. "I was at the beach all summer."

(Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?) Graham eyed him mock angrily when he stole a fry, giving his fingers a quick tap as he pulled back. "Hey! I saw that!" He didn't always notice everything, because he was inattentive at the best days, and right now there wasn't just one person, but two people distracting him. He kind of wanted to glomp Canyon a bunch of times and take him somewhere private so they could talk about how he'd really been, but at the same time he wanted to keep sitting here and chat to Kai and maybe stare adoringly at him. So instead he just rolled his eyes and broke out into a snort of laughter when his friend mentioned the food resembled something he'd cooked last year.
"See, this is why we don't let Gray into the kitchen. This is why, whenever there needs to be food and you can't be arsed to do something, we always get McDonalds or pizza or something" It wasn't that he couldn't cook, it was the fact that he was inadvertently distracted by something, and not called to attention until something was burning or boiling over. But he had other talents, which included sweettalking the guy from Dominoes pizza so he brought him extra garlic bread for free. And honestly, homemade food versus yummy garlic bread and no washing up to do? An easy win.
Seeing Kai go for another fry he sighed and just pushed the plate in the direction of his friend a little more, letting him share whatever they were eating. He never could resist him, could he? "Beach sounds nice. I worked my ass off all summer" Kai sort of half maybe knew what he did during summer, though Graham had never put it into words. It wasn't exactly the side of him he wanted his crush to see. "'s all good though, mum was well pleased when we got to replace the couch. This one's got a part where she can rest her legs too." As long as he got to improve his mums life like that, being in a gang wasn't too terrible.

Once again, his gaze dropped to his food as he quietly listened to the conversation unfolding beside him. He didn’t feel like talking too much but he was worried Gray would notice if he didn’t put his normal two cents into the conversation. Quickly glancing at the mush on their trays. “This is why I bring my lunch,” he noted softly with an air of something similar to I-told-you-so before becoming absorbed in his fruit, still absently listening to the both of them. He couldn’t relate to the topic of Gray’s cooking even though he was fully aware at how… hard he tries to cook. The idea coaxed a tiny smile from him and his gaze flickered to Gray from the corners of his eyes before he felt comfortable enough to raise his gaze to Kai again.
Canyon couldn’t help the gentle twinge of jealousy at both of their summers. Though he was normally such a social butterfly, he kind of wished he had found a table and sat by himself – even though that was pretty much impossible in this cafeteria. Too many students and not enough space. But he had found Graham and didn’t really want to leave him yet. He needed someone to talk to about this, this, this… mess. Unfortunately, he didn’t really feel like discussing it in front of Kai. Not yet, anyway. It never took him long to warm up to someone.
“Am I the only one that didn’t go anywhere for the summer?” How much of a lie was that? He went to the hospital before the second semester started… So, technically he didn’t go anywhere over the summer. “I wish I could have gone to the beach. Or, better yet, England. Gray, I’m climbing into your suitcase next time,” a somewhat-forced but otherwise playful smile curled at the edges of his mouth as he joked. He was so… broad and tall, it was a funny image trying to picture him in someone’s luggage. “Ffffs, I didn’t even work. I wish I could have done that.”
Whatever it was, he wished he could have been doing that over the summer instead of what had really been going on.

( hello, i've waited here for you ever long ) He smiled all too appreciatively as Gray offered to share his french fries. The apple quickly lay forgotten on his tray as Kai reached over and began to munch on the delicious salty goodness. He simply chuckled as he listened to Gray's banter about the food but Kai wasn't worried, he knew that Gray realized Kai was just doing this in fun.
In between french fries popping into his mouth, Kai allowed his gaze to shift back and forth between Gray and Canyon. It seemed as though he was the only person that got to be a kid and enjoy his summer out and honestly this began to make Kai feel a little bit guilty. He kept quiet for a few more moments before finally piping in. "I bet your mom liked the couch. You're so good to her, Gray." He offered a smile, plunging another fry into the ketchup. If Gray didn't watch him closely, Kai was going to eat all of the fries.
But Kai felt even worse for Canyon because as he looked at the boy once more, he suddenly remembered exactly who he was. Canyon had been dating December Lane, the girl who had killed herself in the female dormitories last semester. Kai bit his lip and swallowed his fry. Without meaning to, he stared at the boy with the brown hair, a look of sadness washing over him. Suddenly, Kai reached over the and grasped onto Canyon's forearm and gently squeezed it with a smile. He didn't realize how odd that might seem to anyone who wasn't inside of his head, but Kai was such a sweet boy that it was obvious he was trying to make Canyon better. Perhaps it could be assumed that it was about Canyon's lack of a fun summer.
"Well, since both you didn't get to have fun this summer, let's do something fun this weekend! Just the three of us." Kai knew that Gray would always loved to hang out with him but he honestly wasn't sure if Canyon would agree or make up some reason to decline.

(Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?) Kai could have his fries, Graham didn't care much. He was too busy frowning at Canyons words and then beaming at Kais praise, his cheeks coloring lightly. "Next summer I'm taking you home Can-Can, my mum's been nagging me when that cute friend is finally coming to visit" She nagged about Kai too, a whole lot, though she had seen him before. Just once, mind you, but at least that was enough to satisfy her curiosity, though she had then proceeded to nag him about how cute he was and why he didn't ask him out. Gray had patiently explained to her that Kai was straight, nevermind that he was dating, but she had just rolled her eyes and called him an idiot. He was used to being called an idiot by his mum, so he had just stuck out his tongue, despite the fact that she wasn't able to see it.
When Kai suggested going somewhere this weekend, Gray brightened up again, reaching out, without thinking about it, to wipe a bit of ketchup off the corner of Kai's cheek. When realizing what he was doing, he dropped his hand to the table again and turned towards Canyon, hoping his blush wasn't too obvious. "We should definitely hang out, you're coming with right Can? I haven't seen enough of you for ages, and having my two best friends around will definitely make the weekend a much brighter thing to look forward to." He planned to have some alone time with Canyon before that, wanting to know how he really was and what he'd been up to, but he wasn't going to address any of that in public, as much as he loved and trusted Kai.

“Gray’s just a sweetie like that,” Canyon remarked to Kai’s words about him helping his mother. The smile that was starting to play at the corners of his lips was starting to become true. The more they focused on someone other than… himself… Canyon was able to keep his mind from wandering towards a reality he refused to accept. “You better take me home,” he plucked the last strawberry from his little container, “How dare you deny your mother this little cutie right here.” And he ate the last of his lunch with a playful glint in his eyes.
Though, as soon as Canyon’s gaze fell upon Kai, that little spark disappeared. He looked… sad? He looked sad at Canyon. Before he knew it, Kai reached forward and grasped onto his arm. If Canyon wasn’t so affectionate, he might have thought it was weird that the other had made such a gesture. And, at first, Canyon was a little confused as to why he would do something like that. Wait.. Was it that obvious something was wrong with the senior? Or maybe he was pitying Canyon for the lack of a fun summer? Whatever it was… didn’t matter. The gesture was enough for him to feel at least a little comfort. Sometimes… A simple touch was all he needed.
His light eyes flickered back to Gray when he noticed the younger boy reach forward for… Kai. Slowly, a grin started to stretch along his mouth as he just watched the junior. Oh, Canyon definitely had to talk to Gray alone. Especially with that… was that… was that a blush? Was Gray blushing? The senior couldn’t tell if something was up or not but he was ready to get to the bottom of it. Later.
“Of course I’ll come.” How could he refuse a fun weekend? It was the thing he needed, right? Right? “Fun sounds like a good idea.” What they were going to do was a complete mystery at the moment. Though, Canyon never was one to turn things down.

( hello, i've waited here for you ever long ) He bit his lip softly as he listened to Gray tell Canyon how cute he is. It honestly bothered him a little bit though he couldn't quite pinpoint why. He returned his focus to the french fries, pretending to be interested in dipping the food in the ketchup once more as he spoke. "Well, now that we've all decided to go, we need to decide on where to go." Just as he looked up, Kai was a little surprised by the fact that Gray reached over and wiped ketchup off of his cheek. To be completely honest, it was a little embarrassing and he blushed a bit as he reached for a napkin to wipe his face with it in order to make sure that there wasn't any more ketchup clinging to his skin.
After a few moments, Kai set the napkin down and gently pushed the tray of fries away from him reach. He didn't want to eat all of them. It was Gray's lunch after all. Slowly, his ocean blue eyes flickered down towards the watch that clung to his left wrist. There wasn't a whole lot of time left in the lunch period, which made Kai sigh. He loved his classes but he felt exhausted still, as much as he had when he first sat down. Lunch break wasn't enough to time to recuperate his energy.
"Somewhere fun would be an obvious choice, I know. There's tons of things on International Drive, though they're mostly really touristy.. Putt putt golf, go-karts, that sort of thing." Kai paused, tilting his head and black hair fell over his eyes. "I have a yearly pass to Universal Studios but that's really expensive so unless you have passes too I don't suggest that sort of thing.." Now Kai looked up between the two of them.

(Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?) Graham laughed, playfully rolling his eyes at Canyon. "Shush you. I didn't even call you cute, I just told her about you and she assumed you must be this little hottie I've been hiding somewhere." Reaching out, he playfully ruffled his friends hair, giving himself something to do to cover up for the flush that had stained his cheeks as he'd reached out towards Kai without thinking. "Won't she be disappointed!" He teased, knowing when Canyon met his eyes that he most likely had been clued in on the Kai situation. Which .. there wasn't a Kai situation, and there never would be, but still. He didn't really mind talking about it though, it'd be nice to vent, and he figured that just talking about Canyon would be a pretty short conversation - and rightly so, because some things were just too fresh to discuss.
He grinned happily when both his friends seemed comfortable enough with each other to schedule them hanging out sometime this weekend, and the smile on his face brightened when Kai mentioned go-karts. "I haven't been on go-karts in forever. If we don't go there this weekend, I'm making you take me some other time, and don't think you'll get away with it Kai Durant!" Graham wagged a finger at him then grinned again, feeling like an excited little puppy, though he noticed his enthusiasm wasn't really shared by his friend. It made him calm down - or attempt to, at least, he knew he could be quite annoying when hyper - and rein in his smile. "Tired, sweetie?" Seeing Kai tired made him want to reach out and offer a massage, and he might have, if he didn't still feel so vulnerable with Canyons eyes on him. It wouldn't be the first time but still, it was kind of awkward to offer in public.

Canyon scoffed at the playful banter Gray offered him. Of course he knew the other was just joking but that didn’t stop him from dramatizing the whole thing with a wide grin despite his struggle to hide it. His hand flew up to his chest and his fingers knitted into the fabric of his black shirt. He leaned his massive body away from Gray and stared at him with glittering eyes. “Ouch!” he exclaimed with a gasp, “There goes my self-esteem! Some friend you are!” But, of course, he was just playing. Though, as if to further his faux hurt, he snatched the plate of fries away as Kai pushed them back toward Gray. “No yummy stuffs for you!” Though, after a moment and the theft of one fry, he gave the tray back to the wolf.
His happy gaze flickered between Gray and Kai as he crossed his arms upon the lunch table. Canyon wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to do for the weekend. Chances are, he’d be fine with anything. Even something as simple as a movie. Though, Kai wanted Universal studios and Gray wanted go-karts. “I don’t have a pass,” he admitted with a sigh, “Nor the money to get one at the moment.” As hard as it was to believe, Canyon hasn’t even been to Universal. Or Disney World. He didn’t really live in Florida. He only came for the school and vacationed back home over the summer. December lived in his neighborhood and he normally hung out with her. “Go-karts sounds fine to me. And it’ll be fun to mess with the tourists.”
Now that Canyon thought of it, was he considered a tourist? He technically didn’t live in Florida… Or did he? The thought made his brows furrow.
