Kaze was constantly on the move. It felt troubling to be confined to one space for any amount of time, though she knew better than to venture out onto unfamiliar territory. But the meadows felt somehow familiar to her, like she had been there before. Her thick black legs carried her slowly through the sea of poppies as she thought on it, drifting between than and scanning the horizon for anything that looked out of place. She couldn't put her finger (claw?) on it, but being in Poppy Meadows made her feel like she had better be prepared for anything to happen. Fortunately, her walk had been uneventful so far. Nothing had sprang out at her from the bushes, nor had she run into any hostile varg; it was a good day. Her tail drifted lazily behind her, twitching every so often in time with the steady pace of her trot.
After a while, out of the corner of her eye she spied something small, dark, and off in the distance. Kaze stopped dead in her tracks, lowering her head slightly as she squinted to see. Though too proud to admit it, Kaze didn't have the best eyesight; she'd come to rely much more on scent and sound. The thing (for she had yet to recognize it as a pup) was only a black speck against a sea of bright red. It was easy enough for her to spot, sure, but what could it be? The creature was small enough for Kaze to assume it was prey, so maybe a rat..or a rabbit. She frowned to herself; no, those rodents were small, and this dark creature was larger than she had ever seen before in either species. A groundhog, perhaps? The grew to be on the larger side of the rodent scale, and they could be dark. She had never seen a black one before, but there would always be a first time for everything.
Lowering her body, Kaze tried the best she could to hide her presence as she stalked forward, unblinking gold eyes burning with a hungry curiosity. Whatever it was, she planned on eating it. It had been little more than a day since her last good meal, and a groundhog would be a perfect snack to hold her over until she could find more suitable prey. Plus it had never been in her nature to pass up an opportunity to nibble on something, no matter what it was; hunger was a powerful driving force to her. The closer she got, the faster she began to move. It wasn't long before she was at a full-throttle run, ears folded against her skull as she ran at the still unidentified creature. She licked her lips; she was almost upon it now. Only a few more yards and she would pounce upon the thing and snap it's neck before swallowing it up in huge chunks. Kaze could feel the saliva dripping from her parted jaws; even the thought of food was satisfying.
Within moments she was within striking distance of the creature. She growled now, low in her throat, a very satisfied sound of early triumph. But just as she was about to pounce on the unsuspecting thing, she came to realize that she had been stalking a cub. She growled again, this one louder and much more irritated sounding, before jumping over it in a hasty thought out plan to avoid the collision she had intended to be her final blow. She landed with a heavy thud on all four paws, and turned to look at the small wolf with a scowl. How dare it not be a groundhog!
As disappointed as she was, Kaze didn't have the heart to yell at a child, no matter how big of a wrench they had unintentionally thrown in her half-baked scheme. With a snort, she turned to the black cub, standing taller now with her head high, looking down at her with stern eyes. "Well..yer not a rodent, are ya?" she asked rhetorically. She sniffed the air above the pup and noticed she smelled of Thaerrin land. So her pack had pups within their ranks? That was news to her...
