We were the kings and queens of promise.
We were the victims of ourselves.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I like my job, for the most part. I mean, I can't complain. I get to teach kids how to fly, how to not smack into trees or faceplant into the ground. And I'm lucky enough to teach a fun class, so my students are usually engaged and happy. Whenever I sub for the math class I feel like shooting myself in the throat. I generally like high school kids, when they aren't busy paddling their own douche canoes. It may seem pretty obvious, but I love to fly. I also like puzzles, volunteering, reading and cooking.
I can't stand self-absorbed and whiny people. I worked in poverty and drought stricken areas long enough to learn humility and to appreciate all that I have. I don't like clutter. My possessions are minimal. I don't like water, whether it's rain or a body of water. I prefer cool weather to hot.
TELL ME MORE, PLEASE? WHAT ARE YOU LIKE?
I guess you could say I'm a rebel. My family is a well-to-do, conservative lot. Technically, there should be a "the third" after my name but I dropped it when I went to college because it sounded unbelievably pretentious. I was supposed to finish school and get a respectable job. Instead, I got a Bachelor's degree in engineering, then joined the Peace Corps for four years. Some of my work counted as credits toward my Masters, so when I got back I didn't have to go to school much longer before I got my M.E. I started teaching soon after, much to the chagrin of my family. I keep in touch, but it's no secret they prefer my brother and sister to myself.
I consider myself to be an intelligent person. I graduated from Duke with honors. As my parents never fail to remind me, I could have gone so far. My main problem is laziness. If I have a job to do, I'll get it done in a timely manner, but I'm not a self-starter.
Something that runs in my family that I haven't been able to shake is my pride. As much as I resisted the influence of my parents, I did not do it for lack of self-respect. I will not make a fool of myself or the Hawkins name.
I'm friendly with my coworkers and anybody I meet. I won't speak my mind about somebody unless I'm quite drunk. I don't like to rock the boat, no matter how I feel about someone. The only exception, of course, is when my pride is at stake. I don't make close friends, as a rule.
THAT’S INTERESTING. CAN YOU TELL ME A SECRET? I PROMISE NOT TO TELL.
I nearly got married once, on a whim, around 10 years ago. My fiancee left me at the altar. And here I had thought things like that only ever happened in movies.
One of my childhood friends committed suicide while I was in the Peace Corps. I missed his funeral. His death bothered me a lot more than I let on.
