Rain. It was something the red-headed female, true to her shift, was never really all that fond of. Sure, she liked the pitter-patter of the drops on the roof, but she couldn’t stand getting wet. So, as the rain came pouring down in another typical Florida thunderstorm, the lion Shifter sat on her spacious bed, cuddled up in a blanket, doing her usual Saturday night activities. This included homework Lots of it – including a much loathed and unappreciated Chemistry lab write up. The female took a sip from the bottle of water that had been lying next to her for the entire two hours she’d already spent staring at a blank screen, and chewed her spearmint gum loudly in distaste of the assignment.
”What the Hell do I even write?” she asked herself, grabbing the sheet that had all of her data on it. She scanned her notes and data, finally coming to the conclusion that her teacher didn’t want the assignment to make sense. The seventeen year old let out an exaggerate “ugh”, and stared out the open, but wordless, Microsoft Word page she had pulled up. ”Alright, this is done,” the junior declared in frustration. The assignment wasn’t due until Tuesday; she’d shoot an e-mail to her Chemistry teacher, and figure the stupid thing out in the next couple of days. And, feeling like a quitter, at last, she did what she’d wanted to do for two hours; closed the Word document, and opened up Google Chrome. Her fingers quickly typed an address into the address bar, and the Facebook homepage quickly popped up with a little red flag attached to her inbox. The teenager rolled her eyes, knowing exactly who had messaged her. Leslie McMahon.
Hey Jenny,
Hope all is well with school! How do you like your classes this year? Things are fine back at home. We’ve started to paint the dining room, and now we’re working on the countertops in the kitchen! They’re granite! The ones you liked! Have you made any new friends this year? Your father and I miss you tons! Come home and visit during one of your breaks, we really would love seeing you back home!
Love you honey,
Mom
Though sometimes Jennifer’s mother’s attempts to be “hip” and “in” with what the kids were typing on Facebook annoyed the girl sometimes, the letter still made Jen’s lips curl into a smile. Her mother’s enthusiasm when writing letters never failed to amuse her, and it was great to hear what was going on back home in New York. It was great to hear from her family in general. The junior quickly hit the reply button – she didn’t want to keep her anxious mother waiting, besides, she had a ton of things that she wanted to share with the older woman. Jen’s smile stayed put as the girl began to reply to her mother’s enthusiastic message. Life was great for the most part, what wasn’t there to smile about?
