Canyon Hart Pierce absolutely loved the library. It was the perfect place for him to sneak around and do whatever it was he wanted to do. As long as he stayed in one of the back corners of the library, that was. And what exactly was this senior up to? It was nothing bad. He was never up to anything bad. No, whenever he came to the library, he was looking to make someone smile – maybe not today but one day. It was all he wanted, which was way he was sat against a shelf along the back wall. His school bag was at his side and there was a small stack of books on his other. He would be at a table if it weren’t for the fact that they were all gathered in the middle of the library, right in the view of the desk at the front. Canyon wanted to remain anonymous with what he was doing.
The panda shifter reached into his bag and pulled out his square pad of bright green sticky-notes. These would undoubtedly grab someone’s attention if they so much as caught a glance of it. He set the small squares on top of his bag and pulled the pen from behind his ear before he moved the first book into his lap. The Hunger Games. He remembered reading this his freshmen year. From what he’s noticed, it was a popular series so he opened up to a random page, ripped a sticky-note from the stack, and slapped it down. Quietly, he scrawled out the first note: You have an unbelievably sweet smile. Show it to the world. ♥ The heart was his signature. Every note he left was signed with it. It was a subtle hint as to who was leaving all the notes around school.
Canyon closed the book and repeated the process with the second one. You are beautiful. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. ♥ And so on and so forth with the rest of his stack. Canyon really had no reason as to why he was doing this besides the fact that there was just so much hate in the world. Between bullies and cliques and everything else, it wasn’t uncommon for someone to feel put down or left out. This was Canyon’s attempt at setting it all right. Who knows? It could save a life. Canyon had no control over who read these notes. He simply left them for anyone to find in hopes that fate would guide the people who needed it most to them.

A decently sized pile of sign language books lay open in a semi-circle in front of two brightly red-headed females. One of a petite frame and more of a strawberry red mop of hair, the other of curvier build and a dark cherry pile of curls on her head. The younger of the two, with the strawberry red hair, was pointing to pictures in the books, smiling brightly and signing out letters to the darker haired of the two. The girl's lips were moving, saying the letters in a barely audible tone as she went through the whole alphabet rather quickly. The older girl with the darker red hair seemed to have known the sign alphabet pretty well and followed along with the motions.
"Okay, this one is my name," The younger girl said, her voice was rather soft, but somewhat sluggish, and an off-sounding tone/pitch. She moved her right hand from the ends of her hair up to her scalp, while doing so her fingers wiggled. "It's the sign for fire, but by my hair, cause my hair looks like fire!" The younger girl laughed, "Or you could spell out Daphne, if you didn't know what my sign name was." Again, the girl's voice sounded off, but she complimented her words with the movement of her hands in sign language. The small girl picked up another book, thumbing through the pages absently. A bright green sticky note grabbed Daphne's attention, neatly placed near the top of the page, the girl plucked it from the page and looked it over.
'Sometimes hands can speak louder than voices. <3' was all the note said.
The girl raised an eyebrow, showing it across to her friend, "Starly, where do you think.. this came from?" Daphne's voice was again quiet as her hands matched the movement of the words. Her expression seemed mildly confused, she'd heard Starly speak of finding these kind of notes before, but Daphne never expected one to be in a sign language book. Green/Hazel eyes looked across the library, as if she would catch the culprit hiding behind a magazine with a stack of sticky notes hanging out of their pocket. Fat chance she'd find whoever it was in that moment. Then again, maybe she would.

Starly really enjoyed Daphne's company and she also really enjoyed learning sign language. It had been really easy for her to pick up the alphabet quickly but full signs were another beast entirely. She was having a little bit of trouble with remembering them but Starly was pretty confident that Daphne wouldn't get upset with her for it. She smiled at her friend and blushed a little as he got the word for fire incorrectly. "I'm sorry." Starly spoke it out loud but made sure that Daphne was looking at her when she did it so that she could read her lips. "I'll get it. I promise!"
Starly made herself busy with practicing a few symbols while Daphne thumbed through the pages of the book. When Daphne found a sticky on the page she stopped what she was doing and glanced over. The bright green shade caught her eye like a shiny object would catch a bird. "Aww! That's sweet!" Starly signed the word 'sweet' as she spoke aloud and a bright smile claimed her red painted lips. She absolutely loved it when people did nice things like this. It was much better than bullying and hating. "I don't know who did it but I want to find them and thank them!"
After a few moments Starly followed her friend's suit and began to glance around the library for a sign of who might have left the sticky note. It didn't take very long for Starly to notice a rather handsome guy with wavy brown hair hunched over a stack of random books that had absolutely nothing to do with each other. This looked rather suspicious to Starly, the fact that these books were random. So she grinned at Daphne and pointed quietly in his direction. Then she got up and took the sticky with her.
Starly very slowly began to make her way towards the boy but she tried to look as nonchalant as she possibly could. Once she got close enough she stared down through her retro glasses and her smile got huge once Starly realized he had a stack of stickies. "Hey! Did you do this?" Starly carefully set the sticky Daphne had found in front of the boy. She smiled down at him. "Because if you did, you're really awesome."

Really, it never took Canyon long to move through the stack of books whenever he decided to do this ritual. That’s usually because his stack of books was never too big. He did this frequently enough that if he didn’t want to run out of books to sticky anytime soon. His plan was to have each book graced with one note by the time he graduates. He wants to sticky his last note on his last day. Though, if people took the notes out of his books as they read them, his notes would eventually dwindle down to nothing. He didn’t want that to happen but if he had found something like that, he would have kept it. As long as it makes at least one person smile, he didn’t really care. That was all he was striving for.
After all, a smile was worth so much to him nowadays. Between cancer, suicide, death, bullying, and loss, a smile could change a person’s life. A little note could save a life at least one more day. He knew that from experience… And the lack of it can kill, couldn’t it? Canyon didn’t doubt the power of positive energy nor did he deny negativity its strength. The world was a scary place and while he understood that people need to learn how to roll with the punches and dance in the rain themselves, Canyon couldn’t help but to spread a little sunshine wherever he went.
The senior looked up from his last note and snapped the book closed the moment he realized he wasn’t alone. Canyon tipped his head back and gazed up at the two girls before him. Each had vibrant colors of hair and the site made him smile the friendly smile that never seemed to honestly leave his features – if it wasn’t on his mouth it was in his eyes. Canyon didn’t even have to glance at the sticky to know that he did in fact he do it. He simply just took a second to read what it said before staring back up at the two. It was the note that he had placed in a book of sign language. The first girl obviously didn’t need it. Why was she looking through the book? His gaze drifted to the other, quiet girl… Did she need it?
His smile just grew wider and he nodded his head, raising a hand to sign out the words y-e-s as best he could before bringing this hand to his chin and dropping it down into the other hand as a sign of thank you towards the first girls remark of his awesomeness. Honestly, Canyon didn’t know too much sign language. Just the alphabet and a few choice words and phrases he thought would be useful or fun to learn like: your hair is like fire and I love it and my name is Canyon which he signed slowly to both of them. He wasn’t the best at it and it was obvious in his hesitant gestures and the conversion of the sentence structure from actual grammar to sign language was a little rough. It looked more like hair, fire, you two, I like and name, Canyon, me. He… hoped that was right.
notes: I did a little research on sign language <.< I don’t know if that’s the real structure or not because I only looked at one site sooooo…. Yeah. lol

Daphne couldn't help but giggle at her friend, she knew it would take Starly a while to get the hang of sign language, but the fact that she was trying meant the world to the petite freshman. It wasn't long after the girl displayed the bright green sticky note to her equally red-headed class mate before the other girl had gotten up and marched off like she was on a mission. A wide-eyed Daphne snapped up and followed after Starly as quick as she could without causing some sort of disturbance. "..Wait, Starly!" The younger girl said, her voice barely audible, but it was too late. The sophomore had approached a slightly older looking boy with somewhat long hairof a darker blonde/brown. "Hey, did you do this?'
A pale hand came to the flaming red-heads mouth, covering her slight gasp, she couldn't see Starly's lips or expression to know what was being said, but the boy looked up, Daphne expected him to be surprised, but he wasn't. Not one bit. The male actually seemed rather pleased with himself. And now, Daphne was the surprised one. Her eyes focused on the boy, whose hands began to move in a language the girl understood perfectly, even if he wasn't the best at it, he made an effort. And, it almost seemed like something that could come naturally to him in time. Thus, Daphne's first high school crush was born.
The sticky note had already plucked at the female's heart strings, and her face became flush red (comparable to the color of her hair) as the realization hit he was speaking to her in sign. Daphne couldn't help but grin, and had to resist flinging her arms around his neck with glee. She had watched him compliment both of their hair, thank Starly, and even sign his name. Daphne was ecstatic. The freshman had to catch herself before she burst into a full-blown conversation with a boy who would probably only recognize a few words, but nonetheless, she was still pleased he'd comprehend parts of it. "Daphne." The smaller girl said to him, showing him her one-handed sign for fire up the length of her hair.
Some people considered it an honor to be given a 'sign name', something only bestowed upon you by a person in the deaf community. A sign name they choose for you, based on a whole number of things, something that is unique and is in relation to the person it is given to. Daphne had given Starly a sign name, though it was rather simple, just making the sign for star to the left and right side of her face, which she showed Canyon and said the other girls name after. Lucky for the freshman, she could use pretty much any sign name she wanted for people. Mostly because her and her family were few of the only deaf people in this area. And the only people who needed to really know the sign names of her friends were her family.
